“How can I do this to them, Caelan?” She hadn’t meant to dissolve into tears once more, but she could no more control them than she could control the weather. “They will grow to hate me, but if I don’t, we will be on the street.”

“Shh.” He shifted his position so that he was fairly plastered against the back of the sofa. Naturally, she rolled onto her back as best she could so she could look at him as they talked. “You know that’s not true. I’ve already offered to give you the coin you need.”

“It’s not proper to accept.” She wiped at the moisture on her cheeks. “And you shouldn’t have to do that. It’s not your mess to clean.”

“No, it’s not, but if you are in distress then I am as well.” There was nothing except honesty in his eyes.

“That wasn’t my intent.”

“Oh, I quite agree, but here we are.” The corners of his mouth twitched with the beginnings of a smile. “Before you make any decisions, talk with the laird at Castle Buchannan. Perhaps he will let you stay on after Twelfth Night. No doubt once the snows come, the winter will make travel between here and London difficult if not impossible.”

“What sort of life is that? Being a constant guest and underfoot in someone else’s home that I’m not even related to.” When Caelan rested his hand on her torso, his fingers brushing the underside of her still-bared breasts, flutters of anticipation moved through her lower belly.

“You will at least be safe, stable, and most importantly, you’ll be together with your children.” He tucked an escaped curl behind her ear and then returned the hand to its previous resting place. “If you won’t accept my coin, perhaps you will let me speak with the laird on your behalf? You might not be related, but I am in a roundabout way.”

The fact he was willing to do so much for her made her want to cry all the more. He was a wonderful man, of course, but he just wasn’t the man for her. She shouldn’t even be looking for a second husband when she was still in love with Johnathan.

Wasn’t she?

“I promise to think about it.”

“That’s all I’m asking.” When he wrapped his arm about her and brought her even closer to his body on the cramped sofa, she let out an involuntary sigh and snuggled against his chest.

“Staying at the castle—and it boggles my mind to even contemplate visiting a castle let alone live there—will only stave off the inevitable. Eventually, I’ll have to move forward with my plans.” Would Caelan remain there through the holidays as well? It would make all the difference. But then she shoved that thought away. It was folly to become attached to this man. He had a life separate from hers, and he was destined for greater things. The last thing he needed was a woman prone to tears with two mischievous children in tow.

None of that included love. Not now, not when the foundations of her life had shifted exponentially beneath her feet.
